I always assumed smooth means fast through the air. Rough things catch air, smooth things don’t. Clean, shaved legs must be more aerodynamic than hairy ones. A polished frame must slice through better than a rough one. Except it’s more complicated than that, and understanding why changes how you think about your position on the bike.
The problem is shape. Air flowing around an object doesn’t just care about surface texture. It cares deeply about geometry. A round tube, like a cylinder, is actually quite poor aerodynamically because air flows nicely around the front half, then loses grip on the back half and separates into a messy, turbulent wake. That wake is drag. And your legs are basically fleshy cylinders.
This is why shaved legs, while genuinely helpful at the margins (this does have actual Watt impact!), it still don’t suddenly make your calves aerodynamic. They’re still the same shape. Removing hair tidies up the surface a little, which can help delay where the airflow separates, but the fundamental problem remains. Round things are not great at letting air pass cleanly over them. This is also part of why aero socks with textured fabric can help: the texture isn’t decoration, it’s there to influence how the air behaves around the leg, tripping the airflow in a way that can reduce the size of the wake behind it.
The pros understand this well. Skinsuit design pays close attention to the lower leg. Fabric panels are tested not just for being smooth, but for how they interact with airflow at specific speeds. Some fabrics that feel rough to the touch actually perform better in a tunnel than silky smooth ones. It’s the same principle as a golf ball: dimples on a sphere outperform a smooth sphere at typical ball speeds because they keep the airflow attached longer, shrinking the wake.

Smooth and aerodynamic are not the same word. Your legs are round, and round shapes struggle aerodynamically regardless of surface texture. Shaving and aero socks both try to address this by influencing how air behaves around that shape.
