There are Garmin updates and then there are Garmin updates. Tucked inside the Q2 2026 rollout that started June 2nd is something that cyclists have actually needed for a long time and never quite had done properly: Gear Tracking on your Edge computer!

You can now assign equipment or complete kit sets directly from your Edge cycling computer to every ride, tracking usage across all your bike gear, drivetrain components, wheels, tyres, and even the cleats on your cycling shoes. Progress shows up as status bars on the device itself, and the Garmin Connect app on your phone sends you a notification when a component is approaching end of life.

The cleat tracking detail is the one that made me both laugh and worry at the same time, hah. I had no idea that I should be measuring and tracking wear on these unsung heroes. I mean, arent they supposed to last forever? Apparently not. Knowing exactly how many kilometres a set has done is apparently genuinely useful and also slightly ridiculous, in the best way.
For e-bike riders, compatible Edge computers can now wirelessly connect to e-bikes running a Bosch Smart System to display battery status, smart range routing, and live power and cadence data. I own an e-bike here for transporting groceries and our kids around town, so this is a welcome update as well, just adding it here for completeness. The supported Edge models across both updates are the MTB, 540, 840, 1040, 550, 850 and 1050.
It’s a free update. Enable automatic updates on your Edge and it comes to you. No subscription. Go get it!
